in class writing discussion questions

1. Why does the author put epilogue at the end of the stories? How does it explain about author herself? The story named Epilogue basically displays the life conditions of women in the Haiti. They are unknowledgeable and live a life by following the “strict rules” of Haiti. They live dependently on their husbands and family. They have no freedom and rights to decide their own life. Everything they do is based on their family and being a woman. For example, at the beginning of the story, the author use a lot of sentences to describes their life conditions by using tone of “your mother”, which brings the readers into the story deeply. Your mother’s second rule went along with the first. Never have sex before marriage, and even after you marry, your shouldn’t say you enjoy it, or your husband won’t respect you.” I think the author kinds of talking about her own history through talking with the stories. Because she is also so afraid of talking to be a writer to her mother. Through the sto...

4 questions

Post 4 good thinking/discussion questions on your blog. The questions can refer to any story or stories in the book and/or the epilogue. 1. what is the connection with the author herself with the story Epilogue? GIve specific example to display? 2. what is the connection between the caroline's wedding and children in the sea? 3. The connections of all the stories describes what kinds of message to the readers? 4. in the New York day woman, do you think her mother find her own inner peace?

Epilogue notes

The narrator of the epilogue mostly speak in the second perspective by using “you”  statement. The story begins with “your mother”. “Your mother who looked like your grandmother and her grandmother before her.” I think it kinds of connects with the story “nineteen thirty-seven.” There are also lots of describes about the relationship between a mother and written. At the beginnings, it implies the mother’s perspective of “always use your ten fingers.” And the sound of writing also compare with the sound of “Kira krak” which is foreshadowing and symbols of the woman’s perspective of writing. So when the daughter shows her mother about her writing career, her mother is so disappointed about that. In the story, wirting could not be a thing that woman in this area could do. For example, the author compare the relationship between trees and pencils and pen to show her spirit of writing. However, as the reason of her “mother”, she is so struggling of being a writer. I think the story is b...

New York day woman notes.

Starts from a specific day that the narrator saw the New York City and reminds of her mother. She thought about that her mother never went to the New York City and even feel afraid of taking the subways. She reminds all the the quotes from her mother and all the things she did. ‘would you get up and give an old lady like me your subway seat? 1. His mother’s perspective of others 2. Haiti’s rules about if there’s a traffic accident, the owner of the car could do anything because of their power. 3. Describing his mother about her appearance and life behaviors and even habits. G says as a monologue to explain her job and perspective. Nia’s group: conversation. With the father. She expresses all her Three people conversation, argue, discuss the education about the kids. Post a short reflection on your blog -- what did Tuesday's in-class performances reveal about the characters and stories presented? What was interesting and what did it make you think about or realize? 250-300 words    I think for my group, we did a good job of indicating our identity through the conversation and our actions. For example, I touched my stomach and walk slow to show that I’m pregnant and my partner talked about her experi...

Character analysis

My character is Celianne, who is a young lady pregnant. According to the text, she is only 19 to 20. “She looks like she might be our age. Nineteen or twenty. Her face is covered with scars that look like razor marks.” shows that she is young but pregnant. Celianne is in shock from the experienced she had with the miscounted. She and her mother has been raped by those people. So that’s the reason for her to be pregnant. I’m in the boat. There are lots of people surrounding her. They are all elder than her. “ Most of the other people on the boat are much older than I am.” Also, the description of her appearance is kinds of showing her characteristics. For example, “Her face is covered with scars that look like razor marks. she is short and speaks in a singsong that reminds me of the villagers in the north.” It creates the readers of a character who is shy and stayed away from the world. I think it could connect with Celianne’s experiences of raping. Because of that, she becomes quiet an...

Class post 10/9

Theme from the night woman : At the ending of the night woman, there’s a theme which talking about the ghost woman’s guest and his wife. After the huge break from that, there’s a conversation between the woman and her son. Her son asked her “ Mommy, have I missed the angels again?” “Darling, the angels have themselves a lifetime to come to us.” I think the conversation is so important that it basically points out the main message that the author sends to the readers. It also kinds of showing the relationship between the mum and her son. From my perspective, his son has already noticed or recognized that his mother is facing some huge problems.

In class writing

Choose one theme: compare how it is explored in 2 stories. Don’t just summarize what happen—analyse what the author is trying to think about, etc. try be specific. Children of the sea & night women I think both of the article is talking about how people suffer from their life. The children of the sea talks about the man’s death and night women talks about her life as a “ghost woman.”. Appeartly, the author talks from both the male and female character in the children of the sea to show the different perspectives they have. She is more talking about a story which happens between a couple. For example, through both talking the man’s condition and his lover’s life. However, in the night woman, she describes more about the woman’s emotion and thoughts through narrators. She didn’t describe more about the son’s thoughts, which using the stories to recognize the woman’s life. In Both of the stories, there’s one person who suffering all to protect the other one. For
