compare New York Day woman and night woman
KK Blog Post 3 -- Compare Night Women to New York Day Women. What new opportunities do women have in the US vs. Haiti? What experiences are similar in both stories/places? What does this suggest about gender roles? 500 words.
The narrator of two stories are different. Both of the main characters are woman who works for a job that they think is shamed. However, the stories expresses the truth through different perspective. According to the night woman, the narrator is a mom who working as a prosititude. From her perspective, the readers could recognize the shame of her to do the job. However, in the New York Day woman, the stories starts with the daughter’s perspective, which we could observe more about the mon’s behaviors.
In the night woman, it consists of narrator’s observations and thoughts of the life and her job. Her mind is quickly changing from one step to another one, which is similar with the setting and plots. Moreover it connected with the scene changes from one to the next one. For example, she thinks about a firefly around her house for one night, the other night she memorizes a childhood lesson about the shows. However, comparing with the new York day woman, the each detaile are from the daughters’ perspective and oberservstion of her mom. And the processing of expressing her mom is when she sees anything in the New York, it reminds her about her mom. Then. The stories would describes detailed about what her mom did and said. Appearantly, both of the stories are showing that how the mom loves their kids. However, the stories use different ways to describe them. In the story, both mother are struggling of their life and doing a job which is shamed of telling their kids. This is complication and the main point of both stories. However, the story of the New York day woman are happening in American city instead of Haiti. So the difference of two stories are appeartly. In New York day woman, the daughter see the whole processing that how her mother cannot adapt American culture through her perspective. However, later she saw the condition about how her mother could adapt the American lifestyle well. So in some ways, the story of New York day woman kinds of showing a “saving” story. It means originally Suzette wants to save her mother from the poor condition, however, she suddenly recognized that her mother doesn’t really need to be saved by others. It’s a sad story at the beginning, but having a happy ending finally. Comparing with the story Night woman. It’s filled with depression and hopeless. The stories goes to a more depressed ending.
We could see the strong love from both mothers to their kids. In the story of New York Day woman, it shows the powerful connection between the mother and her daughther. And it is appeartly in the story. Suzette follows her mother for the whole afternoon in the street of Manhattan to make sure that her mother doesn’t need help. Comparing with the story of Noght woman, there is no strong explanation of the relationship instead of the mother’s lie to her son. The lie kinds of showing the depression of their life and how it goes to a worse ending. In general, the two stories show how different “day woman” and “night woman” are and at the same time.
