presentation post
I have learned different techniques from our presentation. I'm interested in Konstantin Stanislavski's acting method since my presentation is talking about Stella Adler, and her acting method is based on Stanislavski. Her acting theme is more focus on actor's imagination instead of memorizing the experience we had before which differs from Stanislavski's method. Also, Lee Strasberg advocates that the actors or actress should be the character themselves, they should concentrate on that they are the character instead of they are acting the character. Moreover, although these theories have a variety of acting technique, the significant goal for them is making the scene look real and natural. They try to use the real emotion to explain the scene, and this way is absolutely attracting the audience better than stiff body movement with unnatural scripts.
There are lots of technique that I can learn from these theorists. For example, I remembered we practice one technique which requests us to practice with our partner by saying one sentences with the different emotion. It could be observed that my emotion will be provoked by my partners. I realize that the interaction between the partners could brings the significant influence to the whole performance. Moreover, Stella Alder's technique also mentions that acting should be taken place into "you and me" instead of "I and me"help me acknowledge that cooperation could lead the scene to a better level. So, connect with our beginning party scene which indicates the foundation of the whole story, we should more focus on the partner cooperation. For example, According to Stella Adler's acting method, when Tom and Amanda are arguing with each other, Amanda should use some movement to provoke Tom's emotion, to make him feel annoying. Their emotion should be stronger and stronger and be excited from each other. It will give the audience a feeling that they are arguing and fighting instead of just having aggressive emotion. Also, when we are practicing, we can use several movements to help them develop their emotion according to Meyerhold's method. They could go to the waiting room and run for a while or beat yoga ball to make their body more active and remember the feeling.
For me, shaping Laura's character is a challenge for me since she has fewer scripts to imply her emotion. Most of time, she just sits here without any words. However, according to Stella Alder, I realize that I could imagine that I get the same personalities with her. I could become a person who is quiet and lives in her own world. Usually, I feel tired after I do a lot of metal work. At that time, I have no desire to talk with others. I just want to stay in my dorm. As a result, I can learn by Stanislavski to memorize my feeling at that time to create the character. Or I could prepare serval hours math test by learning Mayerhold's method. I have to put myself into the character to believe that I'm Laura and my personality is kinds of quiet and stays away from the world.
I think not only me, but also all of my group members laugh or be disturbing when we are acting. Especially for me, some times I care more about the audience instead of focusing on my performance. So, that's also one reason why I cannot get into the character for one hundred percentage. "Self- consciousness is the death of a good acter" said by Stanford Meisner. His method which ask two question to ourself attract me a lot. While every time I would be disturbing, I could ask myself "What are you playing?" "What are you doing?". Those two questions help me perform truthfully and naturally. I should always remember that I'm Laura while I am acting.
So, most of the techniques from those theorists are really useful for me to shape my character and explain my emotion.
